Horses, Gestalt and Grief

Grief is a process that just about every human experiences at some point in life. While it can be debilitatingly painful for many, there is light somewhere at the end of the tunnel, and horses and Gestalt can help. July marked the four year anniversary of my dad’s passing. He was not only my hero, but a role model for countless others, as well. While I had extensive training and experience coaching grief, I had never experienced the loss of someone so important in my own personal life. I was so grateful for my education in coaching and Equine Gestalt, and even more so for my amazing horses for helping me get through that time; and I am honored to get to share some of my experiences and awarenesses here now.

While my dad was older when he passed away, it was still unexpected and sudden. At first, my grief was an eerie emptiness. Even though the sun was shining, I felt as though I was wrapped in a dark blanket. I was tempted to distract myself—hello, denial—and struggled with facing the truth that I wouldn’t be able to just pick up the phone and call the man who had been there for me since I was born. Despite the temptation to be distracted from my pain, I knew that I had to look the new reality in the face in order to process my grief in a healthy way.

In the days that followed, I found myself feeling like I needed to be “okay.” My father was loved by so many people and his passing was heartbreaking for many. I noticed myself trying to “be strong” and “hold it together,” as if my composure would somehow make others feel better. It may have seemed like it worked in the moment, but behind closed doors, the wheels still fell off. I turned to the horses to help me feel what I needed to feel and say what needed to be said. Their unwavering presence and support helped me process one of the most difficult times in my life. Grief is hard. Raw. Beyond uncomfortable. We often don’t know what to say, and that’s okay. Take the hugs. Listen to the stories. And cry the tears because they’re going to come out anyway, whether it’s in the moment, in five minutes, or in 20 years.

A client came to me six weeks after the death of a parent. Feeling the confusion and anger that follows in the wake of death, she felt so lost. She questioned herself and her personal life decisions, and turned to me and my horse partners for guidance. The horses held space for her as she processed all of her feelings, leaving nothing out. They supported her as she dug deeper into herself on her search for healing, compassion and truth. The client was able to say the things that were left unsaid between her and her loved one. Together, we dove deep into her personal values and purpose, leaving no stone unturned. Through this work, she realized that she was never “off track.” Rather, she gained clarity and reassurance that even though she had experienced a devastating loss, she was still the same person at her core. The client was empowered to move forward with her goals and dreams, holding her loved one’s memory close.

While it’s never easy to lose a loved one, horses and Gestalt can help bring peace to the grief process. Whether it’s a recent loss or from decades ago, the horses and I can help. Click here to learn more about how the horses and I can help you through your own grieving process—it’s free!

Horses and Authenticity: Calling Us On Our BS

I’ve said it time and time again that horses are our ride to authenticity. Sounds pretty fancy, doesn’t it? But how? Can horses really help us cut the crap and see our true, authentic selves? The truth is that, yes, horses have the remarkable ability to know whether we are being honest with ourselves and others. They’re like living, breathing lie detectors. Truth seekers, really. Read on, my friends, for the story of how my own horse called me out on my BS, and why he did it.

I Was Full of It

Viper came into my life several years before learning about horses and Gestalt. Thanks to a dear friend and mentor, Danny, I was coaxed into learning how to team rope. For those of you who are unfamiliar, it involves a pair of cowboys/cowgirls, their horses, and a cow, all running at various speeds. Viper was to be my first team roping horse—he was a very qualified athlete that was unlikely to get me killed while I was learning how to chase a cow and swing a rope at the same time. We were a decent pair, and I was improving in the sport, but I had one small problem: I couldn’t catch my horse when he was turned out in the pasture. Every day, I would head out behind the barn to the large turnout, halter in hand and head held high. And every day, Viper kicked up dust and ran a muck. No amount of positive thinking or “fake it ‘til I make it” attitude helped my case. He even got his pasture mates—a mare and a goat—involved. Some days, Danny would feel sorry for me and get my horse before I made my way down to the barn. Other days, I couldn’t even bait him with grain.

One day, as Viper and his buddies tore around their pad, I lost my cool. It had been a long day already, and I was exhausted. “I can’t do this anymore,” I said to myself. I dropped my arms and felt the sting of impending tears. “I am so tired of pretending to be someone that I’m not. I am so tired of pretending to be okay.” The truth was that, while I knew it was my purpose to help others with their problems in life, I was in complete denial of my own. All of the denial and pretending had worn me thin from the inside out.

In my moment of truth I didn’t notice the dust settle. I felt a breath on the back of my neck before seeing my big, beautiful horse’s head reach over my shoulder and pull me in for a hug. I learned in that moment that even if I felt like I had to “fake it,” it wasn’t going to fly with my horse. With him, I had no choice but to be myself, and now there is nobody else I would rather be.

How Do They Know?

As prey animals, it is a matter of survival for horses to be able to sense the energy around them. When we are honest with ourselves and others, our personal energy is congruent throughout our entire body. Horses are attracted to our congruent energy because it is regarded as safe. On the other hand, when we are not speaking and acting according to our truth, our energy is incongruent. Incongruence not only feels gross, but it is potentially dangerous to horses, so they choose to stay away.

Over the years as a certified Equine Gestalt Method Coach (click here for more about the EGCMethod) I have witnessed horses helping clients shed light on their personal truths. A successful businesswoman seemingly had it all together but quietly struggled during family time because she was thinking about all of the things on her plate. A young mother was finally able to express her pent up frustration at leaving the career that she loved and the guilt that accompanied feeling frustrated. A widow voiced that while she liked having a companion for her active social life, she had no desire to get married again. One strong mother stood firmly in her power as she stated that her ex husband’s decision to end his own life was not her fault. As the list grows with varying scenarios and truths, one thing remains the same: the horses always know.

Some clients discover a deep truth that they were not conscious of before. Others find themselves speaking a deep truth that they always knew was there. Regardless of whether they’re newly discovered or held closely and privately to the heart, speaking these truths and receiving validation from a horse is an unforgettable experience that opens the door for the real work to begin.

How Do Horses Help Us Heal?

Over the course of my career as a Certified Equine Gestalt Coach, I have heard the question time and time again: Can horses really help humans heal? And if so, How? The answer to our first inquiry is yes, horses really do have the ability to help us humans heal anything from a run-of-the-mill bad day to our deepest traumas. The follow-up is a little trickier to explain, as the healing process very much depends on the individual human… and horse.

Read on for a few of the ways that horses help humans heal.

Horses help us see our authentic selves.

There’s something about horses that encourages us to drop the act and get real. Perhaps it’s the fresh air that comes along with barn life. Maybe it’s the lovely smell of horse manure. And maybe… just maybe… it’s the fact that horses want pretty much nothing to do with us unless we step into our true, authentic selves. They can literally see through our BS, my friends. As prey animals, it’s a matter of their survival to see past the sly predator and find the truth of the matter (i.e. they don’t want to be dinner). So often, clients come to a session wearing the facade of life: everything is peachy. But it’s not until that mask is dropped that the horses will engage and oh so strongly validate the client’s truth. What is more life changing than a large and powerful animal validating your truest truth?

The door to authenticity is right there. Horses can help you walk through it. (For more on this topic, check out Horses and Authenticity: Calling Us On Our BS)

Just being with horses helps lift our energy.

People with horse experience ranging from zero to professional receive this benefit with little to no effort. Due to their large, strong, and extremely sensitive energetic field, these majestic creatures have the ability to sense our energetic state. And they also have the ability to shift it. If we humans approach a horse with no agenda or distractions—put the phone down, people—we open a door to healing. We might notice the horse getting particularly nosy with a certain body part, or even our entire body. Chances are, he is investigating our energy centers, also known as the chakras. If one energy center seems to be unbalanced or low, the horse can use his own energy to balance it for us. This is done without any detriment to himself, and often completely outside of human awareness. It’s like healing on cruise control—all you have to do is enjoy the ride. With our energy centers back in balance, we are left feeling better than we did before our horse encounter.

Long story short: have a bad day? Feeling uneasy? Go sit with a horse.

Horses help us heal from trauma.

Horses have the most amazing way of helping us work through our darkest times. Those of us with trauma of any kind can benefit from a specific form of healing work with horses called the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method (EGCM). In a session, a Certified Equine Gestalt Practitioner (such as myself) partners with a horse to help guide the client through his or her “unfinished business” or trauma. Unlike other animal-assisted therapies, the horse is an active coach in the process rather than a tool to achieve a desired outcome. Our equine partner naturally possesses the traits, skills, and instincts that help guide the client from a place of pain and push them (at times literally) toward peace. All that is required of the client is the willingness to do the work and an open heart. With the horse’s innate lie detector and energy balancing skills as mentioned above, along with many other natural healing gifts, the horse-human coaching combination can deliver a healing experience that is unmatched by other methods.

In summary

While there are many animal-assisted therapeutic modalities out there, healing work with horses is unique. Our equines are our partners, rather than a tool to achieve an end result, and there are so many different ways that they show up and help. Guiding us to authenticity, balancing our energy and healing trauma are only a few examples of ways that they can help people heal. Putting words to describe these experiences isn’t an easy task, and I always encourage my clients to share their experiences in their own words (you can see what some have said here).
